Library & fork updates

One project can feed others. A design system team keeps its tokens in one project, and product projects receive its changes — only after someone reviews them.

Two ways to connect projects

Choose one in New project:

TypeWhenHow it works
Library project (1:N)Several Figma files share the same token set — design system operationsYour project starts as a copy of the library’s current state, then receives each publish in the Updates inbox.
Fork from an existing projectReuse most of another project’s tokens, then evolve independentlyThe fork is yours to change freely. When the source changes, you’re notified through a read-only feed.

After Next — Select library or Next — Select source, pick the project to connect. Both must be in the same workspace.

Publishing changes (source project)

A project that others subscribe to or forked from shows a Publish button in the master toolbar.

  1. Press Publish — Publish changes compares the project with its last publish.
  2. It shows the total, such as “12 changes → 3 subscribed projects”. “No changes since last publish.” means there’s nothing to send.
  3. Press Publish in the dialog to deliver the changes to every connected project.

Publishing never edits the receiving projects. It only drops an update into their inbox.

The Updates inbox (receiving project)

Updates in the sidebar gathers changes from library publishes and fork sources across your projects.

  • Filter by All sources / Library only / Fork only. Mark all read clears the unread count.
  • Each card shows who published how many tokens, and which of your projects receives them.
  • Review opens Review update — the list of changes from the source to your project. Check the ones you want and press Apply selected (N). Unchecked changes are not applied.
  • Dismiss skips an update you don’t need.

Applied changes land in your master like any other edit — they appear in History and reach Figma on the next Sync.

Who can do what

  • Publishing needs editor access or higher on the source project; applying needs the same on the receiving project. See Team & roles.
  • Translators don’t see the Updates menu.
